Time for Porridge

So, The Porridge Party - episode 01 of The Adventures of Abney & Teal went out yesterday for the first time! It's already available on iPlayer here.

Being so close to all the episodes, it's hard for everyone on the team not to be rather aware of how much we've learned about bringing the show together since the first ones, but today's episode Star Stick is an early favourite of mine.

Meanwhile, it's back to work on the rest of the episodes... I've got bottle-tops and bagpipes to paint.

Oh, and here's a blog post I wrote about the show for the CBeebies grownups site.

Just watched the first episode and I have to say it was wonderful. Brought back memories of The Poggles, Noggin the Nog and The Moomins to this 47 year old.

Gonna share it with my 3 year old later and will let you know how that went.

I guess bagpipes were bound to turn up sooner or later ...

Pete, Thanks. That's good company indeed.

Pete with a P, Here's hoping. There's some way to go until that episode! Andrew, who does the incidental music, is a gurdy player too so we'll see what happens!

Abney and Teal is wonderful. It has the wise philosophy of Moomins, the tinkly, plinky plonky tunes and warm voices of Bag Puss and the lovely hand made feel of Clangers. It is the best children's programme I have seen for years. When I saw the clip advertising it I was immediately hooked and when I saw the first episode and saw you were credited at the end I was not surprised, as I love your books.

I have now lost count of the 'conversations' I have had with my 3-year-old son where I have had to play the 'role' of Neep. My words have been easy to learn ('Neep!'), but attention to the application, accent and timing of each 'Neep!' seems to be quite important and I am kept very much on my toes with regard to keeping things believable! Neep has been very useful in helping a certain little boy overcome difficult situations, such as getting ready to go out or going to bed, and Abney, Teal, Bop, the Poc-Pocs and Toby-Dog have also played their parts to admirable effect (sometimes with my husband's help). I must thank you from the bottom of my heart for providing these wonderful characters for my son's make-believe world, and (shhh! don't tell anyone!) mine too!

Alison, Thanks for taking time to write this, it's very cheering to read while we slave away over more episodes!

This is just such a beautiful programme and my son who is only 20mths absolutely adores it and wants to watch it again and again. The music is fabulous - Toby dog certainly knows a good tune! Thank you for creating this, it really is inspiring and Bop seems to be one of my son Kea's first words!

Please keep making more. It really helps me to stay focused and inspired on my own illustrating work too. It's just a joy and uplifting thing to watch.

Wow, thanks for your kind words Alice. Bit of astonishing thought to even seem to be part of the inspiration for somebody's first ones!
